Through artistic animal “paw prints,” Kim Sullivan hopes to create long-lasting mementos for pet owners while also raising funds for the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina.

On Aug. 30 Sullivan will create paw prints for people who bring their pets to Ghost Harbor Brewing Company in Elizabeth City’s downtown. The event was originally scheduled for the First Friday ArtWalk in August, but had to be rescheduled because of inclement weather.

A former veterinary technician, Sullivan said she plans to create paw prints of dogs, cats and even lizards at the event.

Here’s how it works: Sullivan will place the pet’s paw in paint and then make a mark with it on a postcard-size canvas. She then will create a flower out of the paw print and include the pet’s name and the date of the print on the canvas.

Sullivan said the paw prints are free, but she will be accepting donations to benefit the local SPCA.

“I love animals,” said Sullivan, who fostered four cats and then decided to give them a home, adopting the animals.

The event has been posted on Facebook, and so far it’s generating positive feedback, she said.

“People are extremely excited about it,” Sullivan said.

Originally from Ohio, Sullivan moved to Elizabeth City in 2007 and now lives in Camden.

Sullivan began painting three years ago, and she has been commissioned to create a variety of works, including a “Starry Night of New Orleans,” her re-envisioned take on Van Gogh’s famous artwork.

“My art depends on the music I am playing or how I am feeling,” said Sullivan. “I look at a piece and it lets me know what it wants to do. I don’t force it.”

Sullivan has expanded her artwork to include photography, welding and airbrush paint. She also repurposes furniture, giving each piece a creative flair. She sells her work on the marketplace on Facebook.
