Not all Dems support all Dem candidate positions

Thursday, November 7, 2019

Could someone please tell me why some writers of letters to the editor assume all Democrats are staunchly behind every idea any Democratic candidate for president proposes? And why they then go on to vigorously insult the intellect, common sense and even the faith of all Democrats based on this false assumption? I would never be so presumptuous as to assume every citizen who identifies as a Republican is 100 percent behind every idea any member of their party brings forth. I do not know every Republican in our country and cannot read minds.

What is equally baffling to me is how these authors can claim to be such faithful servants of God while denigrating the character of others (judge not lest ye be judged) and threatening civil war or even the coming down of hell and damnation on us all, if God does not intervene to save us. I tend to think God (and yes, I do believe in God) has much better things to focus on, such as the suffering of the hungry, the plight of innocent people displaced by political conflict, the dying and even those who have no faith.

To these particular authors I’d like to ask, please stop insulting me and others based on assumptions you have made that have no basis in reality. You don’t know me and I don’t know you — something for which I am truly grateful.

As a side note, someone raised this question in a letter to the editor the other day: Are these authors the only ones who submit letters, or is it that The Daily Advance chooses to publish letters from “the regulars” almost exclusively? Could someone at The Daily Advance answer this for all of us?

Editor’s note: The Daily Advance publishes letters it receives from all readers, but our general policy is to publish only one letter per writer per week. When letters are published depends on the volume of submissions we receive.
