WRVS radio and its community partners are seeking to collect 250 new and gently used winter coats by Nov. 2.

Elizabeth City State University television station W18BB, radio station WRVS, the ECSU campus community, College of The Albemarle and the Elizabeth City Police Department are working together to collect warm coats for people in need in Pasquotank County.

Drop-off bins for coats will be set up in the Thorpe Administation Building, the WRVS studio and the K.E. White Graduate Center on the ECSU campus; in the AE Buidling Lobby on COA’s main campus in Elizabeth City; and at the Elizabeth City Police Department.

The project, billed as “Coats in Totes,” is an outgrowth of WRVS’s participation in the annual World College Radio Day.

Melba Smith and Clay Mercer, both of WRVS, decided this year to join with community partners in the service project as an extension of World College Radio Day.

The coat drive kicked off Oct. 5, which was World College Radio Day. WRVS participates in World College Radio Day as a way of promoting its programming, spreading the word about the opportunities provided to students who are interested in broadcasting, and building partnerships in the community.

Smith and Mercer talked with Amy Alcocer and others from COA about the project and agreed on the coat drive as a way to help people in the community.

On Friday COA President Robert Wynegar and Belinda Petricek, COA’s director of recruitment and student engagement, were on the air on WRVS to help get the project started.

This is believed to be the first time COA and ECSU have worked together on a service project of this magnitude.

The coats will be distributed at a community pickup event at the Police Athletic League gym, at a time and date to be determined.
