Northeastern High School is encouraging all alumni to come out for homecoming Friday night as the school honors its inaugural sports teams as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The school was established in 1969 and 1969-70 was the school’s first school year. Northeastern is already celebrating many 50th markers this year and the celebration will continue into 2019-20. The beginning of the 2018-19 school year marked the 50th first day of school for Northeastern and while the first homecoming did not take place until fall 1970, NHS is celebrating the inaugural sports teams during homecoming this year.
Friday night there will be designated areas for tailgating and also tents filled with Northeastern memorabilia.
Northeastern’s football team hosts Currituck beginning at 7:30 p.m. The grounds will be open at 5 p.m. for tailgating and the gates will open at 6 p.m. Because the tailgating event is being hosted by the school, alcohol is prohibited.
Tickets for the football game are $6.
Planning for the celebration of 50 years of Northeastern High School began last year.
This year, Principal Angela Cobb is working with a team to ensure the classes and history of the school are recognized as much as possible.
NHS faculty and many alumni gathered on Sept. 29 to create a video to kick off the “Northeastern 50 and Fabulous” celebrations.
This year the school will celebrate the 50th first day of school, the 50th prom, the 50th yearbook edition, the 50th graduation ceremony and many other events that took place during that first year of school. The 50th homecoming as well as the first graduating class of 1969-70 will be celebrated next year.
Alumni of NHS are encouraged to follow Northeastern’s Facebook page for notices of special events scheduled during the course of this year and next. Events will also be posted on the district website calendar at www.ecpps.k12.nc.us.
