HERTFORD — Robert Murphy of Rocky Mount will serve as interim executive director of the Albemarle Commission, the agency’s Board of Delegates has announced.
The board approved Murphy’s hiring at an emergency meeting on Sunday. He began work at the agency this week.
Murphy’s hiring follows Cathy Davison’s resignation, which took effect on Sunday.
Murphy has experience in local government leadership. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 1970 and obtained a master’s degree in urban affairs from Virginia Tech in 1974.
After serving as county manager in Carteret County from 1997 through 2001, he served as county manager for Nash County from 2001 until his retirement in 2013. Since retiring, he has served as the interim county manager for numerous counties, including Caswell, Pender, Vance and Warren.
The search process to replace Davison is underway. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 3. The Albemarle Commission Board of Delegates hopes to have a new executive director in place by January or February.
Murphy will likely serve until a new director is hired, commission officials said.
