The Head Start Center on Bank Street in Elizabeth City closed Wednesday for facility-wide sanitizing after a student was reported to have a severe skin rash.
An administrator at the center confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the center had been closed Wednesday for sanitizing after staff learned from the parents of a child who was out of school that the child had scabies.
Scabies is an itchy skin rash caused by a mite that burrows in the skin.
Liza W. Layton, coordinator of health services for Albemarle Regional Health Services, said the center’s closure was voluntary.
“Based on information we have available at this time, the center made a voluntary decision to temporarily close their facilities,” Layton said.
The center is expected to reopen Thursday morning, the administrator said.
