CAMDEN — A South Mills woman was injured when a neighbor's dog attacked and killed her dog and then attacked her, according to the Camden County Sheriff's Office.
Sallie Barbara Ames, 82, of Highway 343 North in South Mills, was bitten by a neighbor's German Shepherd around 12:10 p.m. on July 3 and taken to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for treatment, Camden Sheriff Kevin Jones said.
The German Shepherd crossed the road and killed Ames' dog — a smaller, mixed breed dog — and bit Ames' hand as she was trying to protect her dog, Jones said.
The German Shepherd has been released back to the owner after being placed in quarantine for 10 days, Jones said. He said the German Shepherd had been vaccinated for rabies but the vaccination was not up to date.
Ames has pressed criminal charges for negligence, Jones said.
"Camden does not have a leash law but you have to control your dog," he said.
The criminal summons had been obtained but had not been served as of Wednesday morning.
