Elizabeth City police are investigating a collision last week that resulted in the death of a local man who was riding a bicycle.
Sgt. Eddie Graham confirmed Tuesday that Jamul Holley, 21, of the 100 block of Pritchard Street, died Thursday, Oct. 3, a day after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle.
Graham said police responded to a report of a collision between a vehicle and bicycle at the intersection of Main Street and Hughes Boulevard on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 9:17 p.m.
When officers arrived they found Holley, who had been struck by a vehicle driven by William Cartwright Jr., 29, of the 1000 block of Hockmeyer Drive, Elizabeth City, Graham said.
Holley was initially transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center before being airlifted by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Graham said. Holley died from his injuries at the Norfolk hospital on Thursday, Oct. 3, Graham said.
Graham said police are still investigating the collision. Citing that probe, he declined to answer questions about the accident, including which streets Holley's bicycle and Cartwright's vehicle were on, which direction they were traveling, how fast Cartwright's vehicle was traveling and whether Holley's bicycle had an operating light.
