A Perquimans County man was killed when his car collided head on with a tractor-trailer in northern Pasquotank County, Monday afternoon.

Billy Ray Townsend, 27, of Eason Lane, Belvidere died in the collision on Turnpike Road, First Sgt. W.W. Everette of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

According to Everette, Townsend was driving a Chevy Cavalier southwest on Turnpike Road when his car crossed the center line and collided with an 18-wheel farm truck driven by Lloyd Edward Winslow that was headed northeast.

Townsend, who was entrapped in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, Everette said.

Winslow, 64, of School House Road, Elizabeth City, was not injured in the wreck.

Townsend was apparently headed home at the time of the wreck, Everette said. The collision occurred near the Perquimans County line, he added.

It's unknown how fast Townsend's vehicle was traveling, Everette said. Winslow's tractor-trailer was traveling the speed limit, he said.

No charges will be filed in the incident, Everette said.

The patrol was notified of the collision at 5:16 p.m., he said.
