Elizabeth City State University improved several spots in being named for a second straight year among the Military Times’s “Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings.
In its 2020 “Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings, ECSU was 84th among 134 universities recently surveyed by the Military Times. ECSU improved 8 spots in the rankings from 92nd in 2019. The University of Texas at Arlington ranked No. 1 in the latest survey.
The Military Times is an independent news organization that reports on issues affecting the four U.S. Department of Defense armed service branches.
According to the Military Times, the universities were asked to complete “a rigorous survey” that included 150 questions. The questions addressed the institution’s operations that involve current and former service members and their families.
The survey factored information from Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defense, plus information from the College Scorecard and the Cohort Default Rate Database. Institutions also were evaluated on university culture, academic quality, student support, academic policies, and costs and financial aid.
At ECSU’s Military and Veterans Affairs Center, the university actively assists veterans and active service members and their families .
“We make sure that they have what they need when they come to ECSU,” said Tim Freeman, the center’s director.
ECSU recently signed a memorandum of agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard to help strengthen relationships and to offer educational opportunities to Coast Guard personnel.
One opportunity allows members assigned to Elizabeth City to continue their ECSU education online if they are transferred outside the region.
“They get all the help they need to reach those goals,” Freeman said, of ECSU’s veterans services.
