CHARLOTTE — The Elizabeth City State women's basketball team defeated Bowie State 59-56 Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament at the Spectrum Center.

Asia Deal made four free throw attempts in the late stages of the game to give ECSU the lead on separate occasions.

Her final two free throws gave the Vikings the lead for good.

Bowie State falls to 22-5 on the season.

ECSU (16-15) will take on Fayetteville State in the CIAA tournament semifinals today at the Spectrum Center.

ECSU faced Fayetteville State during the regular season Dec. 17, which was a Fayetteville State 69-59 win at the Vaughan Center.

The Lady Broncos (20-7) defeated Claflin in their quarterfinal game 55-42 on Wednesday.

Fayetteville State is the No. 1 seed from the CIAA Southern Division.


Virginia State 67, Elizabeth City State 54: The Vikings (14-16) had their season end in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA tournament Wednesday night at Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte.

Justin Faison led ECSU with 10 points, while Omar Roberts followed with eight points.

ECSU struggled shooting in the game as it finished shooting 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from from field.

Jahmere Howze led Virginia State (25-4) with 13 points and three assists, Cyonte Melvin followed with 11 points, while Antwan Miles posted 10 points in the win.
