GREENVILLE — The Carolinas Team brought home the trophy for the fourth-straight year in the 18th Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Challenge Matches at Brook Valley Country Club on Sunday.

The annual team matches event, which pits eight players from North and South Carolina against eight players from Virginia and Maryland, ended in a Carolinas victory, 7-5.

The Carolinas Team jumped to an early lead in the first round with three points to Virginia/Maryland’s one point in four-ball match play.

In the first match of the day, team veterans Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills and Maria Atwood of Holly Springs teamed up to defeat Faith McIlvain of Ellicott City, Md. and Rory Weinfurther of Midlothian, Va., 4 and 3.

The pair combined for five birdies on the day and continued their four-ball undefeated streak in these team matches.

Chloe Holder of Williamston, S.C. and Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. teamed up to earn a point for the Carolinas, defeating their opponents 3 and 1. The final point in the first round came from Mallory Fobes of East Bend and Deborah Spair of Raleigh, who defeated Sophie Simon of Potomac, Md. and Jayde Dudley of Salem, Va., 4 and 2.

The Carolinas Team entered the final round with a 3-1 lead, but eight points were available in singles matches and it was anyone’s trophy to win.

In the first match of the day, senior team member Muskan Uppal of Cornelius defeated Julie Shin of Brambleton, Va., 3 and 2.

Uppal’s match was tied through nine holes, but birdies on Nos. 10, 13 and 15 gave her the edge and the win over Shin.

Schuster, a junior at First Flight High School, had the shortest match of the day after defeating Sophie Simon, 7 and 5.

Schuster remains undefeated through four career matches at the Girls’ Mid-Atlantic Team Matches.

Chloe Holder continued her steady play and defeated Elizabeth Coffren of Owings, Md. 5 and 3.

Her four-ball partner from the first round, Emily Dunlap also defeated her Virginia/Maryland opponent, 3 and 2.

Schuster, Holder and Dunlap were all undefeated in the tournament.

The Carolinas Team needed 6 points to secure the cup, and their 7-5 victory brought the trophy home for the fourth straight year.

The Carolinas Team graduates four seniors: Muskan Uppal, who will attend the University of Richmond; Mallory Fobes, who will attend UNC-Wilmington; Emily Dunlap, who will attend the College of Charleston; and two-time Carolinas Team member Alexis Sudjianto, who will attend Carnegie Mellon University.

Course information: 6,072 yards; Par 36-36—72.

The 19th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge Matches will be held in Virginia in 2020.
